Superfoods 2018: Turmeric

What is turmeric? It is a beautiful yellow spice that contains curcumin (which provides the vibrant yellow color in the image below). Turmeric has been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory in Chinese and Indian medicine for millennia. The health benefits of this superfood include improved digestion of fats (which is hard on your digestive system), reduction of gas and bloating, decreased congestion, and improved skin conditions (such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema).

  1. For me, Personally, I think Turmeric may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence. It not only the spice that gives curries its yellow color, It has amazing health properties. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. Curcumin can inhibit many molecules known to play major roles in inflammation. I always wondered why my family has been so healthy, no known diseases, or not even catching the cold and/or flu. Its because of all the years of consuming curries with wonderful spices that not only smells great, but does wonders for our bodies. My grandma always taught me her curry recipes and every single dish has turmeric in it. I remember as a kid I loved to climb trees, I always went home with a bruise or cut and my grandma took me into the kitchen and rubbed turmeric with a dash of water on the open cut. I never really understood that, but now I know how powerful this spice is. I LOVE this spice. I go through a lot of turmeric in my house. In India and South Africa, turmeric water is also applied as a cosmetic to lend a golden glow to the complexion. We also use it as a face mask, we mix it with rose water to fight against acne and hyper-pigmentation. I use this mask at least once a week. I do however just leave it on for 10 minutes, or else my face will turn yellow.

  2. Not only does it have all the healthy benefits mentioned in the article, new research is looking into it’s affects on cholesterol. Unfortunately most of the research has only been done on animals, but it showed promising results. However, I have a friend that taking turmeric to try and help heal his shoulder. He found out he hadn’t been taking enough to help with the inflammation for that, but in two months his cholesterol dropped 147 points! He changed nothing else, so I would have to conclude that is also helps in humans.
These tea recipes look delicious! Where can I find Manuka honey?

  3. Like you stated, tumeric is a wonderful superfood that improves digestion of fats. You can take the benefits of tumeric even a step further because tumeric is a great thing to add to your diet if you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is unknown but it can cause painful muscle contractions and spasms which cause cramping pain, diarrhea, and constipation. Adding tumeric to your diet can help reduce the muscle contractions and spasms which helps reduce the pain a person endures and makes life much more enjoyable.
